Self-Employment: Myth #1

Entrepreneurs Are Huge Risk takers

When I started my business 30 years ago, i was struck by how many people told me I must be a huge risk taker.  I really never considered myself to be the type of person who thought it would be a good idea  to walk on a high wire without a net below. As I talked with many other successful business owners over the years a trend began to emerge. I found that the ones who were still in business 10,20, or 30 years or more, were conservative with money, and never took unnecessary risks. The problem with our media and get rich quick culture, the people who make the news are the ones with billion dollar companies. I get it, these are fascinating stories.    But for everyone who makes into the riches with a 20,000 sq. ft. home there is a graveyard of one day wonders.

FAMILY-FRIENDS-& BUSINESS

Generally speaking...seeking business advice or a partnership with a family member or friend is a bad idea. Once you enter into a business association with anyone...the dynamics of that relationship will change forever. If you want sound business advice...talk to someone who has or is currently running a business similar to yours.

Bottom Line: Family and friends are for Christmas and holidays. Don't ruin your family dynamics or friendships over business. You will never recover. What you should be seeking are relationships that you can trust.  If you have any doubt about whether you can trust the person you are working with...RUN!!!

Myth # 1

Entrepreneurs are Huge Risk Takers

People who go into business for themselves are actually risk adverse. We actually see that the biggest risks in life are working for someone else.  Therefore, the vast majority of us want to succeed badly. We keep our overhead low, and watch every penny. We probably won't become a house hold name but that is ok. It's better to be conservative with money then doing something we "hope" works but then blows up in the process.

FOCUS

Today there are more distractions then ever before. Social media, 24/7 news, gaming, etc. If you are going to be successful, turn off Face Book and cable TV and dive into your business or profession. The world will be there tomorrow and if not, there is not allot you can do about it.

Thinking of Starting Your Own Business in the New Year?

You Are Not Alone

Over 60% of people living in the United Sates at some time or another, have a desire to start their own business. If you fall into this category ask yourself this simple question: Why? I believe that you need at least 3 but preferably 5 powerful reason why you want to take this step.

Bad  Reason:  My grandmother told me I make a great meatloaf, so I think I will open a restaurant.

Good Reason:  I want to slowly build a small business that will provide long-term security for myself and my family, a business that will make it through the hard times.

Lifestyles of the Self-Employed

I believe that an individual  needs 3-4 very powerful personal reasons for seeking self employment. This will help when things get tough and you begin questioning whether it is worthwhile to continue the good fight.  For example, one of the major reasons that pushed me towards self-employment was my view that the 8 to 5---two-week vacation model was lunacy.

I could not visualize myself working in an office environment my entire career. This is not the what but the why. Why was I driven in the direction of self-employment? The what came later and I started out in publishing newspapers.

The 3-4 reasons powerful reasons are self-centered but they serve as your own written constitution as to why you are taking this step.  If you can't come up with at least 3 reasons why you want to  be self-employed on a personal level, I believe you will struggle.
